On Sunday 14 September all over Europe celebrations will be held for the European Day of Jewish Culture now in its 15th year, and this year dedicated to the role of women in Judaism. A very specific, intriguing aspect of this theme comes through in the exhibition Artiste del Novecento tra visione e identità ebraica, curated by Marina Bakos, Olga Melasecchi and Federica Pirani. Inaugurated on 12 June 2014, the exhibition will stay open until October 19th and, to honour the theme of the European Day of Jewish Culture which inspired it, on Sunday 14th it will be open to the public at a reduced ticket price. An extra opportunity to discover the 150 works by fifteen women, who have in common their art, and their Jewish roots. From Antonietta Raphael Mafai to Paola Levi Montalcini right up to Eva Fischer, the exhibition – promoted by the Sovrintendenza Capitolina ai Beni Culturali of Roma Capitale (Rome Cultural Heritage Superintendency), the Fondazione per i Beni Culturali Ebraici in Italia, and the Jewish Museum of Rome, with the patronage of MiBACT – is an engaging artistic narrative on the life experiences of these women, of their passions, and of that desire to fight prejudice, each in her own way, using their paintbrushes and their talent to challenge scepticism and discrimination. Not all of them have been given due recognition, and the GAM exhibition can take credit for giving the beauty of these works back to the general public.
