The Fondazione per i Beni Culturali Ebraici in Italia is one of the partners of the European project MiDorLeDor Europe (MDLDE): a training and professional development programme dedicated to the knowledge, deepening and transmission of the Italian Jewish cultural heritage and tourism.

The meaning of the name – From Generation to Generation – is taken from the biblical expression emphasising the importance of handing down individual and collective roots and heritage.

MiDorLeDor Europe (MDLDE) is a European project – modelled on the MDLD Poland programme initiated by The Taube Center for Jewish Life & Learning in Warsaw – which aims to expand the approach and innovative methodologies in the transmission of Jewish cultural heritage, adapting them to the needs and realities of different European countries.

MDLDE is funded by the European Union within the framework of the programme Citizenship, Equality, Rights and Values – Remembrance (CERV-2023-CITIZENS-REM) and builds on the success of multiple editions in Poland and the first Italian edition in 2021-2022.

MDLDE involves participants from France, Germany, Greece, Italy, the Netherlands, Poland, Spain and Ukraine and promotes an awareness of the Jewish contribution to European society, history and culture by training educators and tour guides on Jewish heritage, methodologies and resources to enrich the understanding and preservation of Jewish heritage.

The objectives of the project included the training of national coordinators through three international seminars held in Barcelona, Warsaw and Berlin; the development of a training programme in each of the partner countries; the integration of national narratives with a broader European perspective; and the building of an international network of trainers with the skills and knowledge to effectively transmit Jewish heritage.

The training of national co-ordinators focused on strategies and methodologies for:

  • To convey knowledge of Jewish culture and heritage in its diversity through personal stories, using testimonies, photographs, films, exhibitions and various audiovisual materials;
  • To highlight the Jewish contribution to the societies of destination countries, making Jewish life visible, audible and tangible;
  • To promote a balanced culture of remembrance, to combat anti-Semitism and promote tolerance, dismantle (cultural) barriers and build bridges between the past and the present.

The training was attended by renowned European experts specialised in educational methodologies for heritage mediation and the development of Jewish heritage narratives in line with the EU strategy to combat anti-Semitism and promote Jewish life.

MDLDE, in addition to the Fondazione per i Beni Culturali Ebraici in Italia, involves the following entities:  AEPJ, Centro Sefarad Israel, Jewish Heritage Network, Brama Grodzka TNN, The Taube Center for Jewish Life & Learning, Routes du Judaisme Rhénan, Centropa, Jewish Community of Athens.
