In early June 2020, the Opera del Tempio (the Works of the Temple) began major work at the Jewish Temple in Florence, co- funded by some of the most important Italian and foreign organizations, including our Foundation.
The aim is to consolidate the central floor of the Jewish Temple: recent geo-radar and geo-electric surveys have highlighted floor subsidence in the screed and ballast and widespread voids have been observed in several areas of the central Temple floor, with evident repeated sagging entailing the risk of some sections of the floor collapsing.
Restoration requires great skill and is being carried out on a precious marble tarsia floor with the a repeated Maghen David – the Shield of David or six-pointed star- in a beautiful polychrome marble floor throughout the ground floor of the Temple.
Work will be completed with a careful refurbishment of the floor using suitable and chromatically compatible material to restore the original structure with the appropriate fillings in the many widespread areas of infiltration.
